It looks like the Philippines’ newest billiard sensation has arrived. Jundel Mazon, a relatively unknown cue artist hailing from Manila broke the hearts of the Indonesians after delivering a stunning come-from-behind victory against local bet Irsal Nasution in their race to 10 finals encounter to claim the first ever 2010 Guinness World Series of Pool Championship crown here at Mal Taman Anggrek Jakarta Indonesia, 10 – 5.

Fully supported by the capacity crowd, it was actually Nasution who took control of the match first, capitalizing on a missed bank shot on the green 6ball from Mazon to score first blood. In the 3rd rack, a noticeably sharper and calmer Nasution further stepped up his game to notch four unanswered racks to own an overwhelming advantage, 5 – 1.

With such a lopsided score and home-court advantage against him, nobody thought Mazon stood a chance. But a proven performer under pressure, the Filipino began to heat things up with some supreme safety shots and rail escapes to have his opponent second guessing his shots.

It was at this stage of the match that inexperience came into play. Never having the chance to experience the intense playing conditions of international competition, Nasution’s successful aggressive offensive play early on was replaced by weak safety shots and pot attempts. In contrast, Mazon who has participated in tournaments overseas had a better time handling the pressure and continued relentlessly to chip away at his rival’s lead. With Nasution unraveled, Mazon was able to string an amazing 8 rack romp to overtake and ultimately win the championship and pocket the USD40,000.00 top prize. For his admirable efforts Nasution gets US$10,000.00

“I could not have hoped for a better result. For sure, it was a difficult uphill battle but I was able to regain my composure in the middle stages of the match. From there, I was on a roll and it was then that I knew I had a chance. So I just kept on pushing until the very end. After this extremely grueling competition, I plan on going home, probably relax for a month or two before going overseas again to compete in the 2010 US Open championship.” Said Mazon.

The two relatively unknown combatants actually surprised everyone with their incredible play all throughout the four day tournament organized by ESPN STAR Sports. The Filipino defeated a number of pool heavyweights such as England’s Darren Appleton, 8 – 6 in the semifinals and Japan’s top-seed Naoyuki Oi, 8 – 6 in the quarters to barge into the final round.

Not to be outdone, Nasution, also took down a number of top cue masters on his road to the finals with victories versus 2004 WPA World 9ball Champion Alex Pagulayan, 8 – 4, former double world Champion Ronato Alcano, 8 – 5, and 2007 Guinness 9ball Tour Grand Champion Chang-Jung Lin to book his finals encounter with the Filipino.

Stellar performances from current world no. 5 Darren Appleton and 2007 Guinness 9ball Tour champion Chang Jung-Lin were overshadowed by an incredible performance in the quarterfinal rounds from unheralded Indonesian Irsal Nasution who conquered former double world champion Ronato Alcano to book a seat at the semifinals of the 2010 Guinness World Series of Pool – 10Ball challenge at the Mal Taman Anggrek, Jakarta Indonesia.

Scoring a beautiful 6 – 10 corner pocket combination at the 2nd rack to enter the scoring board, the 23 year old Indonesian hailing from West Sumatra obviously came well prepared in his match against the Filipino heavyweight.

With the score tied at 2 racks a piece, a flawless safety on the blue 2ball from Nasution saw the Filipino commit his first grave error of the match as Alcano misjudged his counter safety attempt to completely expose the table for an easy run-out from the local bet.

Things took a turn for the worse for Alcano in the middle stages where he simply was just trying too much. Missing a bank shot on the 10ball in the 8th frame and forcing the issue on a 9ball corner pocket shot resulted in another successful string of clean ups by his soft-spoken rival to have the score 6 – 3 in favor of the Nasution.

Rare unforced errors at the 10th and 11th racks from the Indonesian gave Alcano some breathing room however. But with the full support of the crowd and a growing confidence in his stroke it was only a matter of time until Nasution claimed victory.

True, enough one final mistake from Alcano on a 4 – 10 combination center pocket blunder sealed his fate as Nasution, after cleaning up the mess, gave Alcano a taste of his own medicine - bagging the emphatic victory with his own 9 – 10 combination.

A jubilant Nasution remarked: "This felt good. I have been practicing so hard these past few months and things are finally paying off. I did not expect to win against Alcano but fortunately my game was on and I was surprised to able to match him all throughout the match. What makes this even more special is the fact that I won in front of my home crowd. This gives me even more confidence going into the semifinals tomorrow."

In contrast Alcano said: “I am disappointed with my performance today. The match was actually pretty even from the start. But it was Nasution who came up first with the big shots. I think that was the key because clearly, momentum was his after that. Although this hurts, I wish him well for the remainder of the tournament. Having him win will give a big boost to pool in Indonesia.”

Earlier in the day, Europe’s last hope for glory Appleton, became the first player to advance to the semifinals after defeating his Mosconi cup team mate and close friend Ralf Souquet 8 – 4 while Chang the last remaining Chinese-Taipei contender, continued to make his country proud by beating American Stevie Moore 8 - 2 in their quarterfinal clashes. Completing the final four is Jundel Mazon who emerged on top versus Japan’s top seed Naoyuki Oi, 8 - 6.

Tomorrow’s semifinals see Nasution hoping to avenge the loss of countryman Ricky Yang when he faces Chang and Mazon having his hands full going up against Appleton.

The second day of the 2010 Guinness World Series of Pool was highlighted by two spirited performance that saw 2010 World Pool Masters champion Dennis Orcollo from the Philippines and Indonesian top seed Ricky Yang bagged a well-deserved quarterfinal slot today.

Orcollo triumphed over  Chinese rival Li He-Wen, 8 – 3 his single knockout stage encounter to lead the charge of his country’s quest for 10ball glory.

Looking sharp after enjoying an unbeaten romp through the double-elimination round of the tournament, organized by ESPN STAR Sports, the Manila native was expected to deliver a spectacular showing against Li, and he wasted little time to stamp his authority earlyby stealing the first rack away from Li to race to an early 4 – 0 lead.

Refusing to be outdone, Li bounced back with a four-ten combination in the 5th rack, followed by a clean run-out of the table after the Filipino scratched on his break attempt in the 6th to make things interesting at 2 – 4.

True to form, the man they call ‘Robocop’ was unfazed by Li’s two-rack streak as he pulled off a beautifully orchestrated break-and-run out in the 8th rack to enjoy a 6 – 2 advantage.

Li, a former World Cup of Pool co-champion, was finally able to stop the bleeding after Orcollo’s failed attempt at a 2ball jump towards the center pocket to pocket another rack. But that would be the last time he would add to his score because it was an all Orcollo show from the 10th rack onwards.

Said Orcollo: “I’m really pleased with how I’ve been playing in the tournament, the balls are rolling my way and luck seems to be on my side. Hopefully this streak will stay with me all the way through the championship. Tonight I will relax and take my mind away from the game for awhile. But come tomorrow; expect me to deliver nothing but my very best.”

Over at the TV table, Guinness World Series of Pool Ambassador Yang put on a special show for the home crowd with a nail-biting come-from-behind victory against the 2007 US Open 9Ball Champion Shane Van Boening, conquering the American with a 8 – 7 result.

On the brink of elimination at 7 – 5 in favor of the American, things did not look good for Yang who was struggling with his form for most of the contest. But through an ironic stroke of good fortune in the 13th rack, Yang finally got the lucky break he was waiting for.  Digging deep and drawing inspiration from the capacity crowd, the local favourite turned the tables to his favor and incredibly strung three straight unanswered points to overtake Van Boening and claim the top of the hill.

Amidst the cheers and with adrenalin still churning through his veins, Yang said: “This was a very big win for me. I actually almost lost hope. But the support of the crowd really inspired me and I am happy to deliver this win for them. Definitely, I will aim for nothing less than the championship because I want to make my country proud.”
